How to Read a Boxplot

The box in a boxplot represents the data that is between the first quartile and third quartile - the "middle half" of the data. Data outside this box is among the lowest or highest 25% of data values. The bar in the middle of the box represents the median - the value for which at least half the data values are no more than it and at least half the data values are no less than it. The interquartile range (IQR) is the distance from the first to the third quartile. The "whiskers" out from the box extend to the last point that is within 1.5*IQR of the edge of the box. Any point outside this range is considered an outlier, and is colored light blue.
